Emerging Leaders Placement Project

Want to help newcomers feel welcomed at Try Toronto events? We're looking for Community Connectors to attend our monthly events and help participants connect with each other.

You won't be leading the event. You'll be the person who makes it feel warm and welcoming. You notice when someone's alone, start conversations, introduce people to each other, help them laugh and realize they're part of something. We run about 10 events a month across Toronto—neighbourhood walks, workshops, volunteering opportunities, social gatherings. You choose which ones fit your schedule and interests.

Commitment:

  • Type: Flexible, ongoing volunteer opportunity

  • Frequency: Choose your own (typically 1-2 events per month)

  • Hours: Varies by event, typically 2–3 hours

  • Format: In-person at Try Toronto events

  • Locations: Various across Toronto

  • Volunteers Needed: Multiple

  • Age: 18+

Requirements:

  • Genuinely interested in helping people connect

  • Comfortable starting conversations and bringing people together

  • Patient, warm, approachable

  • Reliable and shows up

  • Flexible availability (events happen evenings, weekends, daytime)

  • Able to adapt to different event types

What You'll Do:

Show up to the events you choose. Welcome participants as they arrive. Introduce people to each other. Help break the ice. Listen to their stories. Notice people standing alone and gently invite them to join conversations. Help everyone feel like they belong. That's it. The event lead handles the program. You handle the human connection.

What You'll Gain:

Real experience building community. Understanding of the newcomer experience. Meaningful connections with people from everywhere. The satisfaction of helping people feel at home. Volunteer hours letter.

About Try Toronto:
