Newcomer Youth Program – Workshop Volunteer – West Neighbourhood House (Toronto, Ontario)

Emerging Leaders Placement Project

Want to support young newcomers as they build community and skills in Toronto? West Neighbourhood House's Newcomer Youth Program is seeking volunteers to lead workshops, facilitate activities, and help create a welcoming space where youth can connect, learn, and grow.
You'll work alongside a dedicated team supporting youth aged 13–24, bringing your skills and energy to workshops, cooking programs, arts activities, and everyday program support. No experience necessary, just enthusiasm and a commitment to supporting newcomer youth.
Commitment:
Type: Ongoing volunteer opportunity
Frequency: Approximately once a month
Hours: 5–6 hours per session
Format: In-person
Location: Ossington Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M6J 3A2
Volunteers Needed: Multiple
Age: Minimum 14 years old (two volunteer pathways available)
Volunteer Pathways:
West Neighbourhood House offers two ways to volunteer depending on your age. If you're 13–17 (Youth Leader pathway), you'll intake into the Newcomer Youth Program as a volunteer, earn volunteer hours toward school or personal records, and support program activities. No formal registration or background check is required.
If you're 18 or older (House Volunteer pathway), you'll register formally with West Neighbourhood House and complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). West Neighbourhood House guides you through this process. This opens access to broader volunteer opportunities within the organization.
Requirements:
Minimum age 14 years
Demonstrated commitment to supporting newcomer youth
Reliable and punctual
Comfortable working in a team environment
Cultural sensitivity and respect for diversity
Volunteers 18+ must obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) before starting; West Neighbourhood House provides guidance on this process
Key Responsibilities:
You'll select the area that matches your skills and interests. Workshop leaders guide youth through arts, cooking, or cultural exchange activities, planning and facilitating age-appropriate sessions. Cooking program volunteers help plan and lead cooking workshops, teach food preparation skills, and share cultural food traditions. Arts and creative volunteers lead craft activities, support creative expression, and help youth explore talents and interests. Program support volunteers help organize spaces, assist with daily activities, support youth with questions, and help with administrative tasks. All volunteers build relationships with participants, provide encouragement, and help youth feel welcomed and included.
What You'll Gain:
Leadership and mentorship experience working directly with young people. Understanding of settlement and integration challenges newcomers face. Cross-cultural communication skills. Community service recognition and a volunteer hours letter. Meaningful connections with youth and a dedicated team. Experience in youth program facilitation and community support.
